Country profile : Cape Verde

Republic of Cape Verde is a group of tropical islands which is embossed out of the Atlantic Ocean and is approximately 500 km far from the Senegal. Its land is rocky and dry. Also there is an active volcano on the Fogo Island.

The islands are divided into two groups The Barlavento Islands and The Sotavento Islands. Former covers Santo Antão, Sao Vicente, Santa Luzia and Latter covers Santiago, Fogo, Maio, Brava.

It was uninhabited island before the arrival of Portuguese in 1460 ad. They came here and started agriculture of cane and cotton. Agriculture workers were slaves who were brought from the African mainland. The island became wealthy from the slave trading. After 19th century, the decline in the slave trade resulted in an economic crisis for the islands. Cape Verde sank into poverty and people were compelled to fisheries and agriculture for their livelihood.

People living here now, are the successors of African and Portuguese ancestors. Most of them depends on agriculture, rest are either involved in the volcano stones mining or works n Praia which is an important sea-port.  Cape Verde became independent in 1975 and it was a one-party state until 1981. There was a possibility of unity between Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde but this agreement couldn't be approved. In 1991 multi-party elections were held 1st time and MPD (movement for democracy) defeated the opponent with 73 % votes.
