Milkha Singh is known as the pride of Indian athletics. He was born on October 8th, 1935 in Lyallpur ( now Faisalabad, PAK ) in British India. He was a great athlete of his time and is still active for the enlightenment of Indian sports. He worked hard to win medals in the Olympic but he missed the winning title becuase of a little mistake . His coach  havaldar Gurdev Singh used to drive him along the sandy edges of Yamuna river. Gurdev Singh was a strict coach and used to force Milkha Singh for long runs on rocks until he fell unconscious or blood came out of his mouth.

September 6th, 1960 was a memorable day for Indian athletics. Day, the 25-year-old Milkha Singh broke the record for the 400m race in Rome Olympics but missed the bronze medal with a margin of just 0.1 second. It was a notable day in Olympics history, where the players broke the world records for the first two places  and the other three players broke the Olympic records. Milkha Singh's record of 45.6 seconds was a national record  stood for 38 years. He is  the only player who was close enough that he could get an Olympic medal in athletics from India till present. In his last race held in pakistan, he defeated the 'Storm of Asia' Abdul Khaliq with a remarkable margin and won the race. It was unbelievable for spectators, Present General Ayub Khan named him 'Flying Sikh' and he is still known as Milkha Singh - The Flying Sikh.
In Asian games of 1958, Milkha Singh won gold medal in 200m and 400m and in the 1962 Asian games he won the gold medal in the 400m race. 
He is awarded the Padma Shri and Arjun Award for his contribution in Sports by Government of India.
After retiring from Athletics, he established a sports school in Punjab. Famous cricketers like Mohinder and Surindar Amarnath, Hockey players like Surjit Singh are some notable personalities developed in his sports school. He became Sports Director in Punjab Government later. His wife Mrs Nirmal Kaur was A famous international volleyball player of her time and his son Chiranjeev alias Jeev Milkha Singh represents India in International Golf.
